Embracing AI Responsibly in Our Classrooms

As AI enters our classrooms, its appropriate use must be demonstrated first by us, the teachers. Sometimes, without intent, we may misuse AI – lifting entire lesson plans without adapting them to our students’ needs, using AI-generated answers without checking accuracy, or presenting AI work as wholly our own. Such actions send the wrong signal: that convenience is valued over authenticity, and that human discernment is secondary.

Probity is of singular importance in this context.

As educators, we set the standard. When students see us verify sources, refine AI outputs with care, and openly credit their use, they learn that integrity and judgement are part of the learning process. Just as a class teacher makes ground rules in collaboration with students, every teacher in today’s classrooms can insist on an AI honour code.

We will:

  • Acknowledge AI assistance in assignments or projects
  • Verify information before including it in work
  • Rephrase and personalise content to reflect our own understanding and style
  • Balance AI use with personal effort and creativity and be unafraid to make “human” mistakes

Monitoring can include classroom discussions, draft reviews, and reflective tasks.

“AI can be a brilliant assistant, but it should never replace the mind that asks the questions and shapes the answers.”( source: ChatGPT)
